Cosy Pièro
The drawings by Cosy Pièro are created in two different decades and give an impression of her rich and diverse practice entangled with activism. Cosy Pièro was born in Cologne in 1937. After studying fine arts in Brussels And living in the south of France she moved back to Germany and from then on lived in Munich as a single mother. To make a living, Cosy founded the legendary queer artists’ bar Bei Cosy in 1962. At Bei Cosy and other queerbars, she showed her infamous series of drawings that were confiscated and most likely destroyed in 1963 due to the Bavarian “Schmutzund Schundgesetz.” The drawings showed cats with women’s heads and huge breasts performing various acts with each other. It is an honour to host a drawing from this series here in Friesland.
At the beginning of the 1980s, Cosy concentrated exclusively on her art. In 1985 Gabriele von Arnim made a documentary about her. Cosy has tirelessly told young people about her life in various talks in queer-feminist contexts. In 2022 she received the art award of the City of Munich for her life achievement as an artist. Cosy died on June 28, 2023
