Philipp Gufler

Through his artistic practice and his work as an active member of the self-organized Forum Queeres Archiv München (FQAM), artist Philipp Gufler emphasizes that each generation of artists can find new aspects and approaches to engage with history. According to the artist, new futures can emerge by telling and shaping the past in different ways. His work is usually based on research into historical artists and thinkers and the places and networks they maintained. In doing so, Philipp underpins the importance of artistic communities, and particularly the trans and queer individuals who were part of them, as essential to the development of art and culture. At Kunsthuis SYB, he presents a tribute to artist Cosy Pièro, with a new live performance and by showing artworks by Cosy herself. In addition, the exhibition includes Philipp’s signature screen-printed mirrors that color the image and space surrounding the viewer in the moment of viewing.

In his artistic practice Philipp Gufler uses various media, including silk-screen printing on fabric and mirror, artist books, performance and video installation. He co-curated a touring survey exhibition of Tabea Blumenschein, Hilka Nordhausen, Rabe perplexum and accomplices, as well as the seminal exhibition Substitutes at W139 in Amsterdam, with work by Louwrien Wijers and Lorenza Böttner, amongst others. Solo exhibitions by Philipp were presented at Kunsthalle Mainz, International Summer Academy Salzburg, Kevin Space, BQ and Marwan.
