Charlotte Eta Mumm

Grunn en Reason is an assortment of ceramics containing organic materials that Charlotte Eta Mumm collected during her residency at SYB. Peat, sand, oak bark, and horse droppings from the Frisian landscape were mixed into different glazes and then used to coat the plates and bowls. The title refers to the German word “Grund,” indicating at once both soil and reason, foundation or cause. This ambiguity represents an important line of thought in Charlotte’s work process. Prior to glazing, she added drawings and texts into the clay. These stories originate from a personal palm reading session she attended. By applying them to the earthenware and glazing them with soil, the artist proposes the idea of digging for a deeper meaning.
Charlotte’s practice moves between abstract and representational, questioning the presence of things, perspectives and the definition of space versus surface. She works with multiple mediums and materials, such as drawing, sculpture, mud and ceramics.

Charlotte Eta Mumm lives and works in Amsterdam. Her work has been exhibited internationally, amongst other, at Städtische Galerie Nordhorn, Phoinix, Bratislava, Keramiekmuseum Princessehof, Leeuwarden and Arti et Amicitiae, Amsterdam.
