Monique Duurvoort

Monique Duurvoort (1971, Amsterdam) is an independent interdisciplinary artist born in Amsterdam, with roots in Friesland, Suriname and the US. In her work she explores themes of background, (cultural) identity, self-image and symbolism. Trained as a professional dancer at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Amsterdam, she danced with Dutch National Ballet for thirteen years. She then studied Art and Culture Management at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam and became a choreographer, after which she gradually expanded her artistic expression. Monique Duurvoort contributes to ‘Langstme’ on the recommendation of Petra Ponte. For years they have been working from their friendship as a form of solidarity, as Céline Condorelli describes. During Petra’s residency in SYB in 2019, Monique and she spent a few days together looking for traces of Monique’s (unknown) family history.
